Full details of what will be recorded on the cards is at: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/uk_politics/4630045.stm
The purpose of the ID card is for British Citizens/British Nationals, to prove who they are, when applying for UK services and for a private business.
In terms of actually achieving this goal I feel that the scheme should work, if they can get enough interest in it.
The advantages:
- Its a solid way to prove who you are.
- Can help combat imagrantcy.
- Can help catch British criminals.
The disadvantages:
- Will be very costly to set up.
- Can be classed as an invringement of human rights, by being seen as just another way for the British Government to know where we are at all times, a modern day 'Big Brother'
- They may become a compulsory feature of being a British Citizen, with no way of opting out.
